Based on the Broadway offering "Sailor Beware!" THE FLEET'S IN stars Dorothy Lamour as the "Countess of Swingland." She sings at the Swingland club and is known far and wide among its sailor clientele for her coolness toward their advances. Casey Kirby (William Holden) is the painfully shy

gob who inadvertently gets a reputation as a ladies' man and whose pals make bets as to whether he'll be able to kiss the icy Countess in public. He does, and more. Betty Hutton makes an impressive film debut as the Countess' less-restrained roommate, who falls for sailor Barney Waters (Eddie

Bracken). Cassie Daley plays an admiral's daughter. It's not believable for a second, but it's good fun. The play was also filmed in 1930 as TRUE TO THE NAVY with Clara Bow, in 1936 as LADY BE CAREFUL with Lew Ayres and Mary Carlisle, and in 1961 with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis as SAILOR BEWARE.

The tunes include "Arthur Murray Taught Me Dancing in a Hurry," "I Remember You," "Build a Better Mousetrap" (sung by Hutton), "It's Somebody Else's Moon," "The Fleet's In," "Why Doesn't Anything Happen to Me?" "Tomorrow You Belong to Uncle Sam," "When You Hear the Time Signal" (Johnny Mercer,

Victor Schertzinger), "Tangerine" (Frank Loesser, Schertzinger). The plot is mostly secondary to the music, which is almost secondary to the performances.
