Hollywood loves to recycle familiar plotlines, assuming if it worked before, it will work again. And so this testosterone-driven, car-crime picture evokes 1991's testosterone-driven, surf-crime picture POINT BREAK (but not the 1954 road-race picture that laid previous claim to the spectacularly pulpy title). It opens with a breathtaking heist: Armed gangsters in speeding cars force a truck off the road at breakneck speeds. Cut to a diner, daylight, where undercover cop Brian (Paul Walker), who's trying to bust the ring of hijackers, meets street-racing champion Dominic (Vin Diesel), who carries himself like a rock star. Brian quickly infiltrates the Los Angeles racing scene by proving his worth in a brilliantly shot race scene, and by saving Dom from imminent arrest when the police arrive to break up the proceedings. Brian continues to grow closer to the violent Dom by working with him to outfit cars for drag racing, but is secretly trying to discover which street-racing team is behind the hijackings. While romancing Dom's sister, Mia (Jordana Brewster), Brian begins to "go native," as his superiors describe undercover cops who begin to sympathize with the criminals. Michelle Rodriguez, who made a stunning debut in GIRLFIGHT (2000), manages to shine in a small role as smart-mouthed drag racer Letty, while Diesel practically channels muscle-car fury in a few scenes. Walker's stiff cop seems to waver in a state of confusion. The questions by which he's bedeviled — Are his friends the hijackers? Will he betray them? — hardly matter in this nitro-injected action machine, in which flamboyant car stunts take automatic precedence over its few lazy passes at plot and character.
