Cybulski and Ziemann, a young Polish couple, are unable to be alone together because of the critical housing shortage in Warsaw. Caught up in a depressing world of socialist bureacracy and red tape, they somehow manage to transcend their surroundings and find true love. This classic

Eastern European film is a must-see and was unusual in its time as a Polish-West German coproduction. However, the Polish government refused to allow Polish-language prints to leave the country (presumably because they show Polish communism to be grim and dehumanizing in its effects), so most

prints in circulation are in German. The performances are superb and Ford's direction is up to his highest standards. (In German; English subtitles.)
