A scandalous picture in its day, DEVIL IN THE FLESH tells the tale of a 17-year-old (Philipe) in love with a married older woman (Presle) whose soldier husband has been assigned to the front. The story is told through the boy's eyes, in a flashback structure that points out the doomed

nature of the affair. Many contemporary viewers were furious at the way the soldier--a man risking his life for his country--was deceived, and petitions were sent to the French government urging that the film be banned. (Canada agreed to the ban, and New York state censors would show it only after

certain cuts were made.) This touching story now seems quite harmless, but it still works extremely well as drama, hoisted by the wonderful Presle and Philipe and the helming of director Autant-Lara. It was poorly remade as an X-rated film in 1986 by Marco Bellocchio. Based on the novel by Raymond

Radiguet, who wrote his tale of romance at the age of 18, two years before his death.
