Dull undersea adventure that tried to capitalize on the success of the Benchley-Spielberg box-office smash JAWS (1975) by devoting too much screen time to an enormous moray eel as a supposedly equally terrifying watery menace. Plot concerns a young couple, Nolte and Bisset, who discover

sunken treasure while skin diving off the coast of Bermuda. Among the relics they find a cache of drugs recently stashed there, and before they know it they are embroiled in a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with the gangsters who stashed it. Long, confused, and boring, the excellent cast is

totally wasted, especially Shaw, who seems cast (in a colorless role) because of his participation in JAWS. There is a disturbing hint of racism in THE DEEP because all the villains are black. The film will mostly be remembered for Bisset's wet T-shirt sequences. Oscar-nominated for Best Sound.
