Based in part on the life of black educator Mary McLeod Bethune, this message film sponsored by Moral Re-Armament never quite delivers, ultimately failing to convey effectively the teacher's emotional and societal struggles. The weak script relies more on Smith's singing talents than her

acting abilities, and though the tunes are fine, character development would have been more valuable. Bethune (here called Emma Tremaine) is followed from her days as a tough reporter to her activity in MRA. The story is presented in a sweetened style, indicative of the uneasiness about the

subject in 1960--a treatment that drains the tale of emotional impact.
