Wilma (Virna Lisi), an aging showgirl-whore, becomes friends with a La Cicada (Clio Goldsmith, the "gift" of 1982's THE GIFT), a pretty, free-spirited young woman who would die before she would sleep with someone for money. They take to the road and eventually meet up with Hannibal

(Anthony Franciosa), a former salesman whose nickname is Ulysses has dreams of opening a truck stop/banquet hall/hotel/gas station. Wilma and La Cicada become his two catalysts for doing so. Hannibal marries Wilma and the three of them turn the club, named La Cicada, into a financial success.

Although Hannibal is married to Wilma and doesn't seem to be interested in anyone else, she must prove his devotion. Wilma is satisfied that he does not desire La Cicada (as a favor to her friend, La Cicada parades around nude in front of Hannibal to test him), but begins to worry when her

virginal 18-year-old daughter, Saveria (Barbara De Rossi) comes to stay with them. The mother-daughter relationship soon turns into a battle of whore vs. whore. Directed by the 75-year-old Alberto Lattuada, a one-time adherent of the Neo-Realist movement, THE CRICKET (entomologists may balk at the

translation) is little more than titillating, voyeuristic, escapist fare. Despite Lattuada's fascination with the female anatomy (disembodied close-ups, breasts and bottoms bulging out of clothes, nude women frolicking under an Edenesque waterfall), there are enough interesting situations and

character complexities to make up for at least part of the offensive chauvinism.
