THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE is a fine military swashbuckler with some of the most dynamic action sequences ever seen on the screen. Great pains were taken to re-create the 1850s milieu but Warner Bros. typically discarded the actual facts regarding the magnificent military blunder,

retaining instead the era's pomp and the stirring lines of Tennyson's famous poem.

The story begins in in 1850 in northwest India during the years leading up to the Crimean War. Major Geoffrey Vickers (Errol Flynn), a dashing British officer of the 27th Lancers, crosses paths with a scheming Indian potentate, Surat Khan (C. Henry Gordon), who is severing ties with the British

and allying himself with the Russians in preparation for a revolt. After Surat Khan's murderous betrayal of the British forces, Vickers seeks revenge during a foolhardy but courageous charge on the Russian forces at the Balaclava heights in the Crimea where Surat Khan has fled. Meanwhile Elsa

Campbell (Olivia de Havilland), the woman Vickers loves, has secretly fallen in love with his brother, Captain Perry Vickers (Patric Knowles).

As a history lesson, THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE is wildly inaccurate but it is a rousing entertainment. History was better served by the 1968 remake by Tony Richardson which exposed more of the truth about the military idiocy that led to the slaughter but movie audiences were largely

unmoved.
