When the town of Chatham is about to elect an honest district attorney who has pledged to rid the city of vermin like vice king Davidson, the crime kingpin hires out to Chicago for the hitman known only as the "Carnation Kid," a nickname stemming from the white carnation always in his

lapel. On the train to Chatham the kid is recognized and a chase ensues on board. The kid corners an unassuming bumpkin, MacLean, and forces him to switch clothes, making good his escape. Unaware of the identity of the man whose clothes he's wearing, MacLean, a typewriter representative, goes

about his business in Chatham and spends the rest of the movie being mistaken for the killer by the law and rival crooks alike. Eventually the honest D.A. is elected and he fulfills his campaign promise by ridding the city of evil Davidson, but not before MacLean falls for the D.A.'s daughter,

Lee. This comedy begins well enough but the humor begins to fall apart when the viewer is expected to accept the absurd notion that all the cops and crooks are willing to go after a man who bears absolutely no physical resemblance to the man they are out to get, except for a white carnation in his

lapel.
