This tepid date movie impinges on Julia Roberts-romantic comedy territory, but with a down-market budget and a non-stellar cast. At a Texas garden wedding ceremony, it's all systems go for perfect couple John (Ivan Sergei) and Sara (Julianna Margulies). Before the groom heads for his nuptials, however, a monkey wrench arrives in the form of his brother Zack (Clayton Rohner). A reformed alcoholic, Zach chooses this happy occasion — and most inopportune time — to make amends and come clean about the past. While apologizing to John for real and imagined sins, he reveals that he and Sara were lovers before she met John. Suddenly, John has major cold feet and while Sara waits at the outdoor altar with scads of guests, John drives around town with the jitters. Meanwhile, Sara's family reacts badly to the public embarrassment. Pamela (Kathleen York), Sara's single sister, worries whether her Casanova date will hit on some other woman. Carol (Dixie Carter), the mother of the bride, tries to placate an impatient newspaper society editor. And as the guests gossip about the groom's tardiness, Sara's divorced brother amuses the throng with imitations of '70s movie stars when he should be spending time with his neglected son. Even after receiving some sound advice from a lady philosopher at the beach, John nearly calls the whole thing off — and that's before Zack stirs up still more trouble with his confessional ramblings. Will John arrive in time to salvage his relationship with Sara and put Zack in his place? This featherbrained farce lacks the witty ripostes and directorial flair that might have elevated above the level of cliched wedding bell blues. And it's hard not to feel the fuss is much ado about nothing: John's procrastination delays a ceremony that the bride would be well advised to cancel — her juvenile groom is no prize.
