Originally released as VESSEL OF WRATH, this movie was excised considerably before it was allowed to be shown in the USA. Laughton is a drunken beachcomber in the Dutch Islands who is taken in hand by Guthrie, a self-righteous minister, and his sister, Lanchester. In the end, Laughton

marries Lanchester (as he did in real life) and returns to England where he opens a bar. If you think that sounds vaguely like the plot of THE AFRICAN QUEEN, you're right, although the two films are based on different literary works.
