Good performances can't save this insipid tale of a priest and a prostitute, Bogarde and Gardner, who are thrown together in the midst of the Spanish Civil War. Bogarde has had a lapse of faith and has turned in his collar to help the Falangist rebels. On the way he meets and falls for

good-hearted, patriotic hooker Gardner. Soon they are captured by the Loyalists who want a religious statue, for morale reasons, the whereabouts of which only Bogarde knows. During his confinement, the priest decides to pick up his faith and go back to the Lord. Gardner accepts the news and dies

heroically for the rebel cause. Lack of a clear political position (the Falangists and the Loyalists both appear to be villains at times) in writer/director Nunnally Johnson's material clouds the drama between the characters.
