Uneven performances mar this early talking costume drama set during a European conflict in 1815. The father of a young girl, Carroll, is forced to push his daughter into a marriage with the villainous Barry, who holds a debt over the family's head. Enter escaped American prisoner Brisson,

who has been wounded by the French in his run for freedom. Carroll nurses the dashing soldier back to health, and they run off together when the war ends. Carroll does a decent job, but Barry and Brisson look as if they have trouble taking this melodramatic material seriously.
