THE AMBULANCE has a diabolical premise--an evil man kidnaps people to perform bizarre, lethal medical experiments--but it's meant to be a light-hearted action picture.

Josh (Eric Roberts) tries to pick up Cheryl (Janine Turner) as she walks down Fifth Avenue, but Cheryl collapses and is taken away in an old ambulance. Josh searches through New York hospitals, but can't find her, because she's in the hands of a demented doctor (Eric Braeden). Josh goes to the

cops, who don't believe him at first. Doing his own detective work, Josh discovers a number of other mysterious abductions involving the ambulance. He hooks up with Elias (Red Buttons), a cranky newspaper man who takes a picture of the vehicle before getting kidnapped himself.

With the help of cop Sandra Molloy (Megan Gallagher), Josh begins to trace the vehicle. He survives a series of misadventures involving a brutal gang of teenagers and the vicious ambulance attendants, and they trace the ambulance to a night club called Vintage. They bust the club and rescue the

kidnapped "patients," but it's not the happy ending Josh had hoped for: Cheryl asks him to call her boyfriend, and the ambulance escapes. It reappears trying to run down Josh and Molloy. And though he manages to break a few bones, the evil doctor ends up crashing and burning, while Josh and Molloy

share a romantic trip to the hospital together.

Director Larry Cohen's script is filled with amusing, odd-ball characters, and parts of THE AMBULANCE are genuinely funny. But all the goofy humor undercuts the film; the sinister plot isn't sinister at all, and the viewer is left feeling rather cheated. An action farce is a tough proposition,

and without a hint of self-mockery, THE AMBULANCE crumbles in the absence of mystery and tension. (Adult situations.)
