Quinn is a Rumanian peasant falsely accused of being a Jew by invading German forces. He's sent to a labor camp by Aslan, a local police captain who lusts after Quinn's wife, Lisi. Though she loves her husband, Lisi is forced to divorce Quinn so that their property won't be confiscated.

After a year and a half in the camp, Quinn escapes and flees to Hungary. He tries to get help from some Jewish organizations, but they won't help him because he's Gentile. He's taken by the Germans once more, but this time to examplify the best that Aryan breeding can offer. Unwittingly made an SS

officer, Quinn is photographed and his face printed on magazine covers circulated throughout occupied Europe. The war ends, and Quinn is put on trial. However, a letter arrives from Lisi, who now has a child after being raped by a Russian soldier. This so moves the jury that Quinn is let go and

finally reunited with his wife. Despite excellent performances by Quinn and Lisi, the film is a genuine mess. Its episodic structure proved to be overwhelming for the director and writers, veering uncomfortably from comedy to tragedy without any real thought. MGM itself didn't understand the film

and used a variety of ad campaigns to sell it. Quinn carries the weight of the movie, a difficult task he manages to pull off with some degree of success.
