Filmed in Austin Texas in 1993 under the title CATGIRLS, this is one of the better independent films to be released on video by Troma. Unfortunately, this genial parody eventually sinks under the constraints of a miniscule budget.
Hitchhiking his way away from Houston and a failed relationship, Ralph (Dave Cox) is baffled by a glimpse of a beautiful naked girl by the roadside. He is looking for her when he runs into oddball Warren (Gary Graves), a freelance "cat finder." Warren is investigating a mysterious spate of cat
suicides, and enlists Ralph in his quest. Warren's grandfather, an archaeologist who desecrated an Egyptian temple dedicated to the cat goddess Keshra, was killed by cats, sparking Warren's obsession. What Warren doesn't know is that an icon of Keshra has been uncovered in town and is casting its
spell over the local cats, who come back (after killing themselves) as human women. Keshra is instructing them to mate with human men so that she can produce a litter of catmen to help her take over the world. Ralph meets one of the catwomen, Cleo (Carrie Vanston) and is attracted to her, despite
her odd cat-like mannerisms. After a date, she takes him home to the house she shares with the other catgirls. Having mated with him, she is reluctantly about to kill Ralph when he is saved by Warren, who has discovered the icon of Keshra. As Warren tries to destroy the icon, Ralph deduces that
Warren's grandmother was a catwoman, thus making Warren one-quarter cat. Warren eventually becomes possessed by the spirit of Keshra and is able to persuade her to "lighten up." Ralph and Cleo will be allowed to stay together, but only as humans by day and cats at night.
Obviously filmed on a very low budget, TEENAGE CATGIRLS IN HEAT makes the most of its limited resources. While it takes advantage of the simplest special effect there is--female nudity--it doesn't place enough emphasis on it to qualify as sexploitation. Director Scott Perry seems to have studied
Peter Jackson's debut feature BAD TASTE (1988), with which this shares a reliance on outdoor settings and bizarre camera angles. The small cast get in the spirit of things, as each of the "catgirls" provides her own interpretation of a cat-turned-human. Unfortunately, it appears that the
filmmakers were planning on extra funds that never materialized, as the finale seems to be building to a special effects scene that never comes: The conclusion plays like something that was concocted on the spur of the moment (simply telling the villain to "lighten up" is surely a first). TEENAGE
CATGIRLS IN HEAT is a fledgling effort from filmmakers whose future work may be worth seeing. (Violence, nudity, sexual situations, profanity.)
