Director John Ford would later achieve acclaim for his westerns, but he didn't do too badly with this sea adventure either. Foster plays a naval officer demoted and put in charge of a decrepit sub chaser manned by a misfit group, including irresponsible playboy Greene. Foster and veteran

sailor McDonald have their work cut out for them trying to get the old hulk and the men in shipshape condition. Later, when Foster calls for volunteers for a dangerous mission, all crew members respond and heroically sink several enemy subs. Along the way the apathetic Greene learns his

responsibilities to his fellow sailors and, in the process, wins the love of Kelly, the daughter of a tough old ship owner. SUBMARINE PATROL was directed by Ford just prior to his classic STAGECOACH.
