Low-budget drama comes off as a high-budget piece that keeps up the pace and interest throughout. Meredith suffers amnesia, and the story unfolds through his eyes. He flees someone who is shadowing him and ends up in a boarding house where the receptionist recognizes him. As each new

person enters his life, Meredith, along with the audience, picks up clues to his identity. It turns out he is running from a chilling murder he cannot remember committing, and only an old, paralyzed woman can clear him. Meredith is superb as the man who does not know his past and does not want to

know after he finds out who he really is. This is an important early example of the film noir genre because it helped define it.
