La Planche's grandfather is murdered, and she takes over his ferry business. The village she comes to is continually fearful of a vengeful ghost of a man who was hanged for a murder he did not do. The ghost comes back once in a while and kills people for revenge. He will stop only when

someone will give up his life willingly. Edwards (before he hit it big as a director and before he wed Julie Andrews) is next on the ghost's list, but La Planche offers herself instead to save her lover. The ghost is satisfied by La Planche's offer and finally finds peace, sparing both their

lives. An unsatisfactory ending for a picture somewhat muddled by fuzzy images of the ghost (Middleton). PRC was a poor cousin even among the Poverty Row family of studios, but occasionally sparks of inspiration appeared in the studio's thoroughly second-rate pictures. Director Wisbar had made an

extremely stylish fantasy film, FAHRMAN MARIA, in Germany before coming to Hollywood. STRANGLER OF THE SWAMP is basically a remake of that film (with an upbeat ending added), and, though Wisbar didn't come close to re-creating the excellence of the original, his inventive use of lighting, camera,

and sets certainly covered over the usual production deficiencies that accompanied the low-budget films made by PRC.
