A wandering film with an artsy flavor, this movie tells the story of a group of small-town youths bored with life. Their lives revolve around small crimes, drinking, and just talking. They steal a car one night and run over a strange man. He blackmails them, but the next day is found dead

and it appears Reybas is the killer. His girl friend's father is Raimu, a bitter lawyer who gave up practicing law 20 years previously, after his wife left him. However, Raimu agrees to take the case, and in a slow, deliberate style, he proves the boy's innocence. In the flashy climax, he

denounces the town's parents, castigating them for their irresponsibility and selfishness, and finally produces the real murderer. This film was made in occupied France by the French arm of UFA, and predictably it presents an extremely critical protrait of French society. It remains, however, a

stylish film, notable for one of the last screen appearances by the great French actor, Raimu. (In French; English subtitles.)
