An engrossing film set mostly in the New England farmhouse of Duryea, the brother of bank robber Wilde, who arrives with fellow gang members Grant and Hill in search of a hideout. Duryea is less than hospitable, while Grant and Hill are edgy and want to continue on. Wilde, however, is

injured and in no hurry to move ahead, especially since it is revealed that he has a past with Duryea's wife, Wallace, and that Stollery is really his son and not Duryea's. Weaver, a hired farmhand, escapes and attempts to notify the police, forcing the gang to leave quickly. Wilde brings Stollery

along as a guide, shattering the kid's illusions that his uncle-father is a decent man when he shoots Duryea. Battles and gunfights occur until only Wilde and his son are left. Stollery helps him get away, but before he is in the clear, he is gunned down by Duryea, who has been following them.

Horton Foote (TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, TENDER MERCIES) delivers characters with keen personality traits and bizarre idiosyncracies, such as the use of the collar of the dead family dog to decorate the Christmas tree.
