A tremendous commercial success, Touchstone's SISTER ACT is yet another Disney comedy that keeps threatening to get genuinely interesting, only to veer back into by-the-numbers banality. The main plot is triggered when Reno lounge singer Deloris (Whoopi Goldberg) walks in on her lover,

thug Vince LaRocca (Harvey Keitel), killing an informer. Deciding her life expectancy would be severely limited otherwise, Deloris takes an offer from a cop, Eddie Souther (Bill Nunn), to go temporarily undercover until she can testify against LaRocca. Her new identity? A nun in a San Francisco

convent presided over by a stern Mother Superior (Maggie Smith), the only person in the place who knows Deloris's true identity. Since Deloris makes an unconvincing holy sister, the Mother Superior strikes a bargain with her: she will confine herself to her room and come out only to coach the

convent choir, an ensemble of jaw-dropping ineptness. Deloris soon turns the choir into a hymn-singing girl group whose repertoire includes pop classics like "My Guy" and "I Will Follow Him," reworked into religious anthems.

Though it was SISTER ACT's major selling point, the idea of hip, singing nuns bringing down the house wears thin quickly. Nonetheless, director Emile Ardolino (THREE MEN AND A LITTLE LADY, DIRTY DANCING) largely saves the day by coaxing winning performances from an excellent cast. Goldberg's work

here never loses its edge or originality, allowing her to shine opposite Smith, who is so good that she barely seems to be acting. The supporting cast is consistently funny, from veteran performer Wickes to Kathy Najimy, whose maniacally sunny-spirited Sister Mary Patrick keeps threatening to

steal the picture.
