When his son is killed in battle, Murray, a blind man, becomes obsessed with his boy's memory and plans a memorial service for him. Shortly before it is to take place, the son (Patrick) returns. Instead of dying in battle, he has deserted the army and become a blackmailer and a murderer

but now returns home purportedly to make a new life for himself. Gray, Patrick's former wife, is afraid to tell him that she has remarried. The story builds to a climactic ending in which Patrick and Murray fight on a balcony, and the would-be patricide falls to his death. Despite a small budget,

this adaption of a popular English play is well done, with snappy direction and some excellent characterizations.
