A musical version of THE MALE ANIMAL (1942), SHE'S WORKING HER WAY THROUGH COLLEGE is another of Warner Bros.' musicalized recyclings of one of their earlier films. Burlesque dancer Angela Gardner (Virginia Mayo) forsakes bumping and grinding to enroll at a small midwestern college, where

she studies writing from quiet, conservative professor John Palmer (Ronald Reagan). Palmer also directs the school's plays, usually classics, but Angela is determined to do a musical and writes one herself. Having fallen for Angela, the campus BMOC (Gene Nelson) joins the cast, provoking the

jealousy of his girl friend (Patrice Wymore), who blows the whistle on Angela's questionable past. Meanwhile, Shep Slade (Don DeFore), the old flame of Palmer's wife (Phyllis Thaxter), appears on the scene, raising the professor's ire. Not surprisingly all of these conflicts find a happy

resolution, and the show goes on. Peter Milne's screenplay, based on James Thurber and Elliott Nugent's play "The Male Animal," frequently misses with its jokes, but the elan of the performers and director H. Bruce Humberstone's skillful handling of the proceedings make this a very watchable film

just the same. Sammy Cahn and Vernon Duke are responsible for the songs with the exception of Al Dubin and Harry Warren's "With Plenty of Money and You," plucked from GOLD DIGGERS OF 1937. The other songs include "She's Working Her Way through College," "I'll Be Loving You," "The Stuff That Dreams

Are Made Of," "Give 'Em What They Want" (sung by Mayo, Nelson), "Am I in Love?" (Nelson), and "Love Is Still for Free" (Wymore, the Blackburn Twins).
