A tepid thriller produced for the USA cable network in 1993, SHATTERED IMAGE contains a few unexpected plot twists, but doesn't generate enough excitement to overcome a lifeless lead performance by Bo Derek.
FBI agent Brian Dillon (Jack Scalia) investigates the kidnapping of clothing czar Ben Algood (David McCallum). Ben's wife Helen (Bo Derek), a former fashion model, does not hide the fact that she loathes her husband. When a car fleeing the scene of the kidnappers' hideaway crashes and its
occupants are burned beyond recognition, Algood is presumed dead and the FBI closes the case. Brian believes that Algood is alive and may have staged his own death to get away with $10 million which he embezzled. Brian learns that Helen was having an affair with Ben's brother David (John Savage),
and suspects the pair may have planned the kidnapping.
Three months after the kidnapping, Helen runs into Brian, who is running a seedy, run-down store. He claims to have left the FBI but the store set-up is just a ruse to get close to Helen. They begin seeing each other romantically. Brian finds himself drawn to Helen but still isn't sure if he can
trust her. Clues surface which suggest that Ben is alive and has had his face surgically altered to resemble his brother. When David tries to kill Helen, she isn't sure whether it is David or Ben. The real Ben returns late one night, as Brian and Helen are attempting to trap David. Ben kills
David, and is then killed by Helen. Helen admits to Brian that she and David plotted Ben's kidnapping. She wants to run off with Brian, and when he refuses, she pulls a gun on him. Brian had given Helen the gun for protection, and not fully trusting her, he had loaded it with blanks. Helen is
The production's biggest asset is Scalia, adroitly playing the virtuous investigator. His commanding presence and easy charm make SHATTERED IMAGE watchable. Derek sleepwalks through her ice-princess role. Helen's guilt is strongly implied early on, diminishing any sense of suspense engendered by
the plot's myriad twists and turns. Technical values for this $3 million production are satisfactory.(Violence, nudity, sexual situations)
