This fictionalized account of actual WW II events set in Amsterdam is an enlightening and engaging exploration of the Nazi invasion of the Netherlands. De Vries and Krabbe are two men with vastly different methods of dealing with the German occupation of their country. The former is a

highly educated Jew with a nonviolent bent that borders on collaboration. His goal is to secure the safe passage of Jews out of the country, an activity that requires him to work closely with Nazi officials. Ultimately de Vries fails, and resigns himself to a menial job for the Nazis. Krabbe, on

the other hand, is a leader in the Dutch resistance. He is a man of action, who bombs buildings and murders Nazis while keeping a wife and two mistresses. Krabbe's death mirrors the way he lived, fought, and loved. After being captured by a Nazi official, Krabbe ignites a bomb that blows both him

and the German to bits. Both de Vries and Krabbe are based on actual WW II figures; de Vries on the peaceful theologian Friedrich Weinreb, and Krabbe on the resistance hero Gerrit van der Veen. While van der Veen was posthumously recognized as a hero, Weinreb served a term in jail for

participating in what was wrongfully considered Nazi collaboration. His memoirs served as the basis for SHADOW OF VICTORY. (In Dutch; English subtitles.)
