Despite fine performances from Lee and Nagel, SECOND WIFE is nothing but an uninspired melodrama that suffers from some contrived scripting. Lee stars as an eligible young lady who chooses to marry widower Nagel instead of Huntley, despite the latter's warnings that she'll never measure up

to Nagel's first wife. It appears as if the warnings were true because Nagel leaves Lee when his young son takes ill in Switzerland. Lee, now pregnant with Nagel's child, is upset by this lack of attention and decides to take off with former suitor Huntley. Huntley, however, wants nothing to do

with the kid, and it slowly dawns on her that she should return to Nagel and her stepson. He, of course, takes her back and all is resolved. In 1936, a remake of the film by RKO starred Gertrude Michael, Walter Abel, and Erik Rhodes.
