A young man discovers that he has some really scary family ties in this enjoyable, surprisingly taut thriller. When Bowen receives a letter from his estranged father (Wise) asking him to come to his California ranch for a reunion, Bowen doesn't know that Wise has a new wife, beguiling

blonde Wren. As Bowen drives into the town, he's stopped by the sheriff (Brown) and instructed to fix his car. Bowen pulls into a gas station, but its owner (Pollard) runs like hell when he learns that Bowen is Wise's son. Finally arriving at his father's ranch, Bowen is greeted by Wren, who

introduces herself as Wise's "housesitter." As darkness falls and the wind starts to howl, Bowen and Wren enjoy a night of lovemaking. The next day Bowen gets the shock of his life when he learns that Wren is his father's new bride. To reveal any more of the story would spoil the fun, but be

assured that SEASON OF FEAR will scare the devil out of you before the many twists and turns of its plot have been resolved. From Clancy Brown's down-home sheriff to Michael Bowen's prodigal son, the acting is excellent. In fact, Michael J. Pollard's gas station owner and Ray Wise's Fred Drummond

are among the creepiest characters to emerge in the cinema since BLUE VELVET, while Clare Wren sizzles as the sexy stepmother who drives men crazy. To put it simply, writer-director Doug Campbell has made a very entertaining B movie. The real mystery here is why MGM-United Artists decided to

release SEASON OF FEAR on so limited a basis. Don't watch this one alone.
