Nami (Yohko Saitoh) is a respected L.A.-based interior designer, but when her fiance Jiro (Tetta Sugimoto) is killed in a car bombing, poor Nami suddenly finds herself framed for his murder and thrown into a brutal women's prison run by a sadistic Bible-thumping warden. When he's not ordering the guards to shoot arrows into the prisoners to keep them in line, he likes to douse himself with perfume, then choose an inmate to rape while reciting passages from Scripture. "Welcome to hell!" the butch Annie Lennox look-a-like inmate growls. Determined to clear her name and find out who really killed her lover, Nami fashions a weapon out of a harmonica and leads a prison break, then sets across the desert with a blind Asian girl named Yukiko (Shizuka Ochi) who's also hell-bent on revenge. Taking refuge with a newsman (Takanaori Sugimoto), they map out strategies, but violent surprises await both women. Brought to you by the producers of ZERO WOMAN, this hard-boiled women's prison drama contains all the usual cliches: shower scenes; bitch fights; rape and plenty of gratuitous violence. SCORPION offers slammer cinema sleaze with an Asian slant, but it's too slick and lacks the camp elements of such '70s howlers as BIG DOLL HOUSE and BIG BIRD CAGE. The presence of three credited directors — Tomoko Hojo, Noboru Tsunoda and Daisuke Gotoh — seems a bit excessive.
