This reissue of gentleman pornographer Radley Metzger's 1972 softcore ode to open marriage is a candy-colored reminder of the heady days when a movie could transform a repressed newlywed into a pot-smoking slut and have a

happy ending. Jack and Elvira (Gerald Grant and Claire Wilbur) keep their union lively with a little healthy sexual competition, and Elvira is about to fall behind. She has her sites set on the prim Betsy (Lynn Lowry), who's resisting her advances, and Jack ups the ante with a side bet

involving Betsy's husband Eddie (Calvin Culver). When the two couples meet at Jack and Elvira's house for dinner, the game begins in earnest. Based on a risque Off-Broadway play and invested with far higher production values than the average softcore film, this swinging artifact is ripe for

rediscovery: From Claire Wilber's overripe lady of the thea-tuh enunciation to the shag-heavy decor and oddly haunting soundtrack, this is as retro a pleasure as the films of Jess Franco or Russ Meyer, and a lot easier on the eyes. Prim and plot-heavy (not to mention talky) by the

raunchy standards of contemporary pornography, it harks back to that brief and shining moment when porno was chic and no one could have imagined the ascendance of amateur smut. Be warned, though -- this isn't BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS: It's a blast from the harder end of the softcore

past.
