An absorbing but at times badly flawed actioner detailing the efforts of a group of British scientists to perfect radar at the outset of WW II. Five scientists bicker among themselves over how to achieve their goal, but ultimately they pull together and make the necessary sacrifices to

get the job done. Top-billed Richardson plays a meek, slightly eccentric scientist who winds up heading a nighttime test raid over Cologne in order to bomb a German-held radio station. The mission is a success, the Allies have perfected radar, and the reluctant soldier is hailed a hero upon his

return to England. As would be expected from young writer-director Ustinov (he was 25 years old at the time), a nice sense of humor is integrated into the proceedings, a refreshing change from the deadly serious propaganda films that dominated the screen at the time. Unfortunately, portions of

SCHOOL FOR SECRETS are too talky and tend to drag on past the point of interest, but the action scenes are excitingly handled and manage to keep the narrative aloft.
