One of the finest of Ingmar Bergman's late-period films, SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE was in its original form a six-episode, 300-minute Swedish television series; Bergman cut it for US release. Here the director-writer again proves that he is one of film's best, and most theatrical, directors

of actresses, giving the inimitable Ullmann a superb script that casts her in the role of an abandoned wife forced to deal with her weak husband Josephson's involvement with a younger woman. Filmed almost entirely in extreme close-ups by the masterful Sven Nykvist, Ullmann's face conveys a variety

of expressions reminiscent of Renee Falconetti in Carl Dreyer's silent THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC. The film is not without its faults, especially a certain choppiness resulting from the paring of the television version. (Its made-for-television visual content, however, should be admirably suited

to videocassette.) There is little plot to speak of--the film's chief force lying in its dramatization of marital trauma--but viewers will be deeply moved by the marvelous acting and the honesty of Bergman's screenplay.
