A tough film noir about a cop, Johnson, who is determined to track down his partner's killers. He gets a tip on a couple of bookies from one of their molls, pursuing and eventually killing one and getting injured himself. Hampering his efforts is the concern of his wife, Dahl, who fears

for his safety, urging him to quit the force. He finally gives in to her and turns in his badge. An officer who takes his place, however, gets killed, and Johnson returns to the beat, even more intent on revenge than before. Thoughtful characterizations and a tightly knit script put this one on a plateau above the average B crime movies of the day. Producer Harry Rapf receives credit for the film, although he actually died early on in the

production.
