Anchoriz is a British commander during the reign of Queen Victoria. While occupying the East Indian village of Tapuah, Anchoriz and his troops win the hearts and minds of the people by killing off the population en masse. Of course, he makes a major mistake by including Reeves's family

amongst the victims. Reeves organizes a rebel cell that attacks the Englishmen, but Anchoriz retaliates by threatening to hang Reeves's father, an important sultan. Reeves manages to get into Anchoriz' home and kidnaps Grad, the British commander's niece. In the hallmark tradition of films of this

sort, Grad is at first indignant but soon comes to love her captor. Reeves and company meet up with some headhunters but overpower the brutes only to find themselves surrounded by Anchoriz' troops. An agreement that calls for Reeves and his rebels to be exiled in return for Grad's release is

reached but is, of course, immediately broken by Anchoriz. He throws the revolutionaries into prison and plans for executions. The prisoners escape, however, and are rejoined by Grad. Joining with Kumar, a local chieftain, they overcome the British forces at last. Plenty of action here, not all of

it exciting. Reeves is good, although covering his much-acclaimed frame with clothing hurt a lot of the ex-Mr. Universe's drawing power. This was the twelfth film he had made for cheap Italian production companies aimed at the younger filmgoer, but he went on to make A LONG RIDE FROM HELL, an

R-rated western that was certainly an unusual move for the muscleman. Despite this film's simplistic plot and routine action sequences, SANDOKAN THE GREAT did good business, particularly at movie houses that specialized in action films.
