Sammy Stops the World Reviews

Updated version of the musical "Stop the World--I Want To Get Off," rewritten for Davis in what amounts to little more than an ego-fest for the talented singer. The simple story is of Davis as a poor coffee vendor who rises to the top by getting the boss's daughter pregnant and marrying her. He becomes a big wheeler-dealer in the business world, dabbles in politics, has a few affairs, and otherwise sings and dances up a storm until he realizes his wife is the only girl for him. Davis' hipster black man characterization panders to the worst of stereotypes about blacks with a touch of Las Vegas glitz mixed in. This filmed version of the stage production includes occasional shots of the audience. The direction is inept, as the camera remains rooted in place for nearly the entire film.
