Having recently moved to Florida from New York, Little Leaguer Russell tries to impress his new teammates by claiming that his widower father is a chum of Yankee superstars Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris. Backed into a corner by his lie, Hutch is then called upon to produce the Yankee

sluggers or face humiliation. Unwilling to resign himself to his fate, the plucky youngster not only makes his way to the Yankees' spring training camp, but he actually meets Mantle and Maris. However, when he explains his predicament to the home-run-hitting duo (Maris had broken Babe Ruth's

single-season homer record the previous year), the honesty-is-the-best-policy advocates refuse to help him. Or do they? Guess who invites the whole group to spring training? Mantle and Maris are no Redford and Newman, but then Redford and Newman couldn't hit a baseball like Mantle and Maris.

(Okay, in THE NATURAL, yes, but that's only the movies.)
