This affectionate send-up of classic B westerns stars Tom Berenger as Rex O'Herlihan, the perfect good-guy hero who wears fancy white outfits with lots of frills and embroidery, drinks milk, rides an ultrasmart horse, and only shoots villains in the hand. He rides into the dusty town of

Oakwood Estates and immediately knows the score. When a group of varmints, employed by powerful cattle rancher Col. Ticonderoga (Andy Griffith), enter the saloon and try to run off the local sheepherders, Rex rises to the sheepherders'defense. When queried by the town drunk (G.W. Bailey), Rex

reveals that all western towns are the same. They all have whores with hearts of gold, corrupt sheriffs, town doctors, "oddly asexual" lady schoolteachers, defenseless sheepherders, and evil cattle barons who are always named "Colonel" and have beautiful but naive young daughters. He can

accurately predict--to the minute--what is going to happen after he arrives. To surprise Rex, the villains hire another good guy (Patrick Wayne) to fight him. RUSTLER'S RHAPSODY isn't a sidesplitting masterpiece of comedy, but it is a pleasant enough movie for those who love the silliness of B

westerns. Director Hugh Wilson has an obvious love and understanding of the genre, and he knows exactly which buttons to push to get a laugh. Berenger is excellent, Griffith is delightful, and Wayne (son of John Wayne) is hilarious.
