Burdened with a most unwieldy sequel title (why not simply "Return of the Return of the Living Dead"?), this movie is not so much a continuation of the surprise horror hit of 1985 as it is a remake, considering that the original movie ended with the nuclear annihilation of the entire cast.

Maintaining the goofy black humor that made the first film tolerable, the sequel again begins with the opening of the same deadly canisters that caused all the problems last time out. The mist from the canister seeps into the cemetery, contaminating the humans who breathe it and reanimating the

buried corpses. In a comic sequence, dozens of corpses interred during a variety of historical periods come stumbling out of their coffins with a sudden craving for brains. Gore fans will appreciate the special effects (by Kenny Myers), which are superior to the ones employed in RETURN OF THE

LIVING DEAD--the highlight being a pair of legs that continue to walk around after being separated from the zombie's torso. The humor here, as in the first movie, is strictly sophomoric and mostly slapstick. Director Ken Wiederhorn is a competent, if unremarkable, talent who handles the action

scenes in a professional manner. His writing talent, however, is not equal to that of the first film's writer-director, Dan O'Bannon, and the sequel lacks its predecessor's snappy, biting dialog and O'Bannon's satiric edge. Wiederhorn instead gives us lines like "No, duh." Although not nearly as

successful financially as the first film, RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD PART II made enough to turn a profit.
