A tense but unfulfilling film about an attempt at the perfect murder. Schell is living with his stepdaughter, Eggar, in post-WW II Paris. His wife, Thulin, was tortured at Dachau, one of the Jewish prison camps, and finds Schell in the arms of and setting up house with her stepdaughter. Schell is driven by unrelenting greed as he kills Eggar and then tries to murder his wife to fulfill his passion for money. But he doesn't succeed, and Thulin and Lom, the doctor who reconstructed Thulin's face, end up together.
