Convinced that her she'll never be accepted as a true American, Yvette is scolded by her mother for refusing to take pride in herself. The tensions between mother and daughter soon come to a head when Yvette accepts a ride home from a local drug dealer, and finds herself in the middle of a violent confrontation. Subsequently to live with her grandmother Luisita in Mexicao, Yvette is startled to discover that Luisita is far from the rigid conservative she had envisioned when the two share a candid, heart-to-conversation that leads to a lasting trust. Later, Yvette discovers that discrimination works both ways after striking up a friendship with a local boy named Chema, and in turn drawing the ire of Rosa, his older sister and the girlfriend of Javier, a kindly local who previously got the cold shoulder from the guarded newcomer. Before long Rosa and her scheming friends have launched a small campaign to humiliate Yvette that opens a rift between Luisita and Mr. Marques, from whom Yvette's grandmother has taken out a sizable loan. When Mrs. Marques plots to use the loan as a means of taking possession of Liusita's home, Yvette resolves to win the cash needed to pay off the loan by participating in a local competition staged to find the person most knowledgeable about local history, and their family heritage.
