One of the more successful entries in the crowded ranks of early 90s neo-noir thrillers, RED ROCK WEST is the tale of a hapless drifter caught in a web of corruption in a remote western town. It offers suspense, wit, genuine surprises, and a trio of top-notch performances.

Hard-luck case Michael (Nicolas Cage) finds himself broke in the town of Red Rock, where bar owner Wayne Brown (J.T. Walsh) mistakes him for "Lyle from Dallas," whom he's hired for a job. Eager for work, Michael plays along with the misunderstanding, only to find out he's being offered $10,000 to

murder Wayne's wife, Suzanne (Lara Flynn Boyle). Michael informs Suzanne of Wayne's intentions, whereupon she doubles the money offered if Michael will turn around and kill Wayne. Michael takes the money and tries to run, but finds himself trapped in the inevitable web of violence, corruption, and

double-dealing, which only gets worse when the real Lyle from Dallas (Dennis Hopper) arrives on the scene.

Released directly to video in 1993, RED ROCK WEST surfaced theatrically in 1994, thanks to the enthusiasm of one San Francisco exhibitor and a handful of critics. A cleverly plotted drama of infidelity, greed, and bad luck, it's truer to the spirit of classic film noir than many of the rival

offerings released at about the same time (DREAM LOVER, CHINA MOON, etc.). Cage is the near-perfect embodiment of a modern-day noir hero and the rest of the cast is equally fine. There's hardly a false note in a script that stands out for its structure and consistency, and the story never stops

twisting and turning. The result is stylish, suspenseful and satisfying.
