Unprovoked mayhem and plot surprises abound in this crime thriller fueled by Mario Van Peebles' hyperkinetic performance. Years ago, Hispanic cop Blair Valdez (Mario Van Peebles) covered for rookie Ethan Lang (Zach Galligan) when Lang froze under fire. While Valdez distinguished himself in the line of duty, Lang retreated to an academic post as professor of criminology. But a cop's salary couldn't keep Valdez's mistress, Isabel (Nicolette Sheridan), in the lap of luxury. So to make ends meet, Valdez developed interests outside the law. Out of the blue, Valdez pops up at college to request a favor of Lang. Without explaining the extent of his involvement in a barrio check-cashing firm, Valdez seeks hypothetical advice about money-laundering. After picking the gullible Lang's brain, Valdez embarks on a campaign to rip off his business associates through arson and homicide. Valdez gradually becomes paranoid, beginning to suspect Lang and Isabel of two-timing him; in reality, they want him to return the money he's just stolen from his bosses. In order to sweeten his percentage, Valdez eliminates his current police partner, Richie (Scott Getlin), who was involved in Valdez's rackets. After also assassinating his drug-dealing cohorts, Valdez makes Lang the fall guy, killing one of Lang's students and framing him so he can't squeal on Valdez. Valdez plans to tie up all the loose ends by killing Lang, but he may have underestimated his mild-mannered patsy. Rreposterous plot twists collide constantly in this colorful but hard-to-swallow cop-arama. And no matter how hard he rolls his "r"s, Van Peebles's Latino stylings are as bogus as this thriller's battle between intellectual brains vs. criminal brawn.
