Berggren, a factory worker with literary aspirations, hopes to escape from Raven's End, a slum district in the Swedish city of Malmo. However, his meager earnings and those of his beleaguered washerwoman mother, Storm, go to support the lifestyle of his alcoholic father, Hjelm, who views

himself as too cultured to accept employment as a common worker. Berggren's first novel is rejected by a publisher, albeit with some encouraging words. Disconsolate, he turns to a young neighbor girl for "sympathy." She becomes pregnant and has every expectation that he will marry her. Fearing

entrapment in the Malmo slum, Berggren deserts her, running off to Stockholm. The film received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film in 1964, but lost to YESTERDAY, TODAY, AND TOMORROW.
