Veidt's portrayal of the legendary monk depicts him more as a victim of prejudice than as an evil influence over the czar's family. Starting in the small village of Poskrowoskoje, where his miracle healings are noted, Veidt is taken to the court to treat ailing son Aljoscha. Because of his

continual drunken disorderliness and womanizing, Veidt is sent back to his village, but he returns to St. Petersburg when war breaks out to convince the czar to take over the high command. On this sojourn Veidt meets a duke and a man whose fiancee he has seduced; he is later drawn into a palace

and shot. Ossip Dymow, an acquaintance of Rasputin, had a hand in the script, which may account for its depiction of the monk as a much gentler man than the common conception.
