Filmed at Rutgers University, the direct-to-video horror throwaway PLEDGE NIGHT spends most of its time chronicling elaborate torments endured by college dunderheads seeking entry into Phi Epsilon Nu fraternity.

The Phi Eps run their hazing like a boot camp designed by the Marquis de Sade, and the cameras record minute after minute of psychological and physical abuse--a lot of it involving the ingestion of fecal matter, some counterfeit, some genuine. After a while one almost believes the filmmakers are

striving to make a statement, about warped values, about fascism, about Greeks. But noooo! On the final night of "hell week," the angry ghost of a former pledge bursts messily onto the screen (out of the chest of one character, in fact), and starts serious killing. Billed as "Acid Sid" in the

credits, he's a 1960s-era hippie who was dunked in muriatic acid during his long-ago hazing and died horribly. Now looking and sounding like the poor man's Freddy Krueger, Sid (Will Kempe) slaughters the frat rats with lines like "That's for Spiro Agnew!" and "Which way to the protest?" The

picture concludes with the revelation, telegraphed far in advance, that the lethal Sid is the father of one of the pledges and just wants to protect his beloved son.

Plot twists like that remind one that the first sound in the picture is a toilet flush. Chemically scarred Sid constantly gives off smoke and can be briefly frozen by a fire extinguisher; that's it for intellectual content. Even undemanding gorehounds might find too long a delay in getting to the

carnage, which includes the harrowing of a snotty sorority sister with an electric potato masher. (Violence, profanity, sexual situations, nudity.)
