Dean Paul Martin (son of Dean) and Ali MacGraw star in this disappointing tennis-centered film that might have been called "40-Love Story." MacGraw plays Nicole, a wealthy, 40ish sculptor; Martin is Chris, a stud some 14 years her junior who does his hustling both in bed and on the tennis

court. Beginning with a Wimbledon final that pits Chris against real-life tennis star Guillermo Vilas, the story flashes back to reveal Chris's rise through the ranks of professional tennis and the deterioration of his relationship with Nicole. Although its drama is never very engaging, PLAYERS

offers lots of authentic, top-flight tennis action, including appearances by such familiar faces as Pancho Gonzales (who plays Chris's coach), John McEnroe, John Lloyd, Denis Ralston, John Alexander, Jimmy Connors, and Vijay Amritraj (who would later appear in OCTOPUSSY).
