TV personality Bob Eubanks, of "Newlywed Game" fame, was executive producer of PAYBACK, a klutzy action vehicle for his son Corey Michael Eubanks.
Clinton Jones (Eubanks fils) is a handsome convict who busts out of the big house and heads for a small Nevada town, where he lands a job pumping gas. Like most American small towns in bad movies, this one is dominated by a cadre of above-the-law bullies, led by wealthy, Aryan college football
player Terry Cartwright (Vince Van Patten). In short order, the stoical stranger and the rich creep become deadly enemies. Furthermore, Clinton attracts Terry's estranged girlfriend Christie (Teresa Blake), who happens to be the daughter of Sheriff Pete (Michael Ironside), determined to haul in a
certain escaped convict.
Bonehead subplots grind down the viewer's patience long before the "real" story gets in gear: Clinton knows the whereabouts of a lost narcotics stash and uses it in a revenge scheme to lure druglord Jeremy who put him in prison. This preening villain is played by Patrick Swayze's brother Don, a
forceful presence who's repeatedly been wasted in throwaway roles like this. But nobody comes out of PAYBACK with honors. Dialogue is flat-footed (romantic line: "Do you realize that you're all sweaty?") and even the filmmakers lose track of the plot complications. Near the end psycho Terry is
thrown in the town jail for homicide, but Christie thinks it's her beloved Clinton in the darkened hoosegow. She swipes the key, unlocks the killer's cell, approaches the shadowy figure in the bunk, and--reappears later, safe and sound, ready to ride off with Clinton into the sunset. It's as
though everyone just forgot about that portentious earlier scene. And maybe just as well, for 94 minutes of PAYBACK is quite sufficient.
It was filmed not in Nevada but in Santa Barbara and Palmdale, California, and came to home video in 1991. The end credits give special thanks to sex-and-violence exploitation mavens Andy and Arlene Sidaris, but the rough stuff here is comparatively mild. (Violence, profanity, sexualsituations.)
