Twelvetrees plays a showgirl mixed up with a gangster. To avoid going to jail, she accepts a job as a housekeeper for Bickford, a local businessman. After her boy friend (Armstrong) returns from supposedly being lost in an air accident, she finds out that he is merely using her to get to

the rich man's money. She shoots Armstrong, and thinks she has killed him. Bickford sends her to New York and promises to join her there, where they will be married. As it turns out, she did not kill Armstrong because Bickford fired a second shot that proved to be the fatal bullet. This turgid

programmer has many problems: the script is riddled with plot inconsistencies and the characters' motivations are confusing, with Armstrong, at first the romantic interest, becoming the heavy, and Bickford switching from bad guy to hero. It was all too pat and easy to be believed. Remade in 1939

as PANAMA LADY with Lucille Ball.
