This sweet, often painfully honest coming-of-age film centers on Tina (Laura Hunt), a 16-year-old from Atlanta who is reluctantly spending the summer on a farm with her grandparents (Willard Miller and Geneva Hiergesell). Tina is uncomfortable with the arrangement because her grandfather,

a rather odd old man, shows incestual interest in his granddaughter. Rose (Catherine Williams), Tina's best friend, quickly becomes a confidante, though she is plagued with troubles of her own. Rose fixes Tina up with Rich (Johnson West), one of the local boys, but this bit of matchmaking leads to

complications with Tina's grandfather. The sexual tensions among characters are well handled, giving OVER THE SUMMER a darker edge that separates this from many films about adolescence. Tina's newfound self-awareness and the uncomfortable feelings she has around her grandfather are well drawn by

writer-director Teresa Sparks. OVER THE SUMMER suffers from the underdeveloped relationships between important secondary characters, as well as wooden acting from some of the nonprofessional cast members.
