Washington is a voodoo princess in Jamaica who decides to kill Paxton, the fiancee of plantation owner Leonard, whom she loves. Locals carry Paxton off to the place of sacrifice, but Leonard learns of the plan and rescues his intended. Washington flees into the jungle and dies. The

production had a fascinating history, begun when Terwilliger (who gained prominence as a screenwriter for D.W. Griffith) and Berger (who had shot most of Frank Buck's BRING 'EM BACK ALIVE) arrived in Haiti to film, but were run off by voodoo curses and strange accidents. They returned to the

capital, Port-au-Prince, and hired drummers, dancers, and extras to take to Jamaica, where they planned to shoot the film instead. But before they could leave, all the dancers disappeared and the rest of the cast was put in jail. Finally arriving in Jamaica, Terwilliger and Berger put together

another cast and began shooting. The heat of the day was too much for the crew, so they took to filming at night under floodlights. Two Jamaicans died in a cloudburst, a cyclone leveled the sets, and disease claimed the life of one American crew member. After two months, the film was completed but

it received virtually no bookings. In 1939, the script was rewritten and shot as POCOMANIA, also known as THE DEVIL'S DAUGHTER, with an all-black cast led by Nina Mae McKinney and Hamtree Harrington. A fascinating but hard-to-find film.
